Learning about our new Basque friend, Valeriu:
We’ve never met an individual with so many names before! Everywhere the man goes, he seems to ascertain a new nickname. On day one we peculiarly decided his Scottish name would be Andrew. Why? We’re not quiet sure.
Andrew will be our new junior web developer and we’re excited to have him as part of the team until May. This will be our 5th Basque intern, and our knowledge of Basque (or Spanish) hasn’t exactly grown at an exponential rate, so we’re determined this time will be different. Let’s find out a bit more about the 23 year old:
Why did you decide to join Odd Panda Design?
In my last year of studying we have the opportunity to do an internship in any country across Europe to get more real world experience and the chance to learn more outside of the classroom to improve my programming skills. I’ve already done a three month internship in Ireland and I decided to visit Scotland this time. I did a bit of research on development companies in Edinburgh and found Odd Panda Design. The projects they have been involved in and the outcome of both their websites and mobile app projects, made my decision easier. I applied for an erasmus programme through Sepie who got in touch with Odd Panda about doing an internship and I am now looking forward to the next three months.
What will your role be at Odd Panda Design?
My role at Odd Panda will be as a junior web developer within the company. I’ve been working with the team around a week now and I’m already heavily involved in coding work on different projects. I like it… I love it! I’m already feeling comfortable with the coworkers who are all very friendly and considerate with my level of English.
I hope to learn a lot of things during my time here and return to my hometown Igorre with new skills and experiences which will be useful for my future.
Finally, tell us a bit more about yourself. What do you do in your spare time?
It’s a difficult question. I’ve been very busy over the last few years, working at night and studying during the day. I barely had time to sleep until now that I’m doing the internship, and that’s not an exaggeration. When I did have the time, I remember playing a lot of video games and driving my car as much as possible, but I love motorbikes too. I’ve been lucky enough to own two so far. There are nowhere near as many motorbikes in Ireland or Scotland as there is back home, but I’m looking forward to getting back and riding around Europe. Every summer I drive for two days to spend some time in Romania. I love a good road trip!
The other thing worth mentioning is my love of watching movies and American TV series. I guess my favourite film would be Inception and I’m currently addicted to both Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. Most of all though I spend my time (even my own free time) developing websites. It’s a hobby I’ve had since I’ve been young and I’m lucky that I’ve been given the opportunity now to do it as a career.
